  • Walking shoes—you’ll do a lot of walking to see all the sights, so make sure you’re comfortable

Must-See Places in France (Besides Paris)

Nîmes

An ancient Roman city that will capture your heart, Nîmes is one of the best places to visit in the south of France. Check out the Arena of Nîmes—it’s one of the largest Roman amphitheaters in the world—and the various other historic sites while you’re in the area. Once you’ve gotten your fill of history, head to Les Halles de Nîmes, a covered market full of the freshest regional produce.

Marseille

The beautiful Marseille must be on your list of places to see in France. Also located in southern France, this port city is an absolute treat for visitors. There’s so much to see and do—the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, the Old Port, and Fort Saint-Jean, plus incredible shopping, delectable food, and so much more. Make sure to bring your camera—you won’t want to stop snapping pictures of this exquisite city.

Mont-Saint-Michel

Located off the northwestern coast of France in the Normandy region, Mont-Saint-Michel boasts some of the most beautiful views you’ll set your sights on. It’s one of the most iconic places to visit in France. Reach the UNESCO-protected Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey by foot during low tide, or take the shuttle. It’s a gorgeous sight from afar, and it’s even more heavenly as you wander the abbey itself. Truly, you don’t want to miss it.

Alsace

We had to include the entire region of Alsace because it’s all too gorgeous to choose just one town. It’s distinct, charming, and full of dazzling villages. Almost all the villages are full of colorful half-timbered homes and Gothic churches—you’ll feel like you stepped into a storybook. The region is also known for its white wine, so you’ll definitely want to book a wine trail adventure during your visit!

Loire Valley

The gorgeous Loire Valley is located in central France. Showcasing an incredibly rich cultural heritage, it’s also the largest UNESCO-protected site in France. French kings in the 15th and 16th centuries built massive retreats here purely for entertainment—the châteaus are wonderful places to explore. Visit the Châteaus de Chambord, de Chenonceua, and de Cheverny for an experience you’ll never forget!
